eSIM Not Working? Don't Panic, Here's How to Fix It

Okay, so your eSIM decided to stop cooperating. Classic.

eSIM Not Working. Maybe it worked yesterday. Maybe it never actually turned on properly. Maybe you’re standing in an airport right now with no signal, low battery, and a slight headache.

Whatever the situation, you’re going to be fine. I promise.

Most eSIM problems are just a setting that got switched off, or your phone being confused about which SIM to use. Nothing dramatic. Nothing that needs a tech expert. Just a few taps in the right place and you’re usually back online.

Let’s go through it

Before Anything Else Quick Sanity Check

Does your phone actually support eSIM? And is it unlocked?

If your phone is locked to one network (like your home carrier), it will block any other eSIM from connecting, no matter what you do more on that in Fix 7 below.

If you’re not sure, keep reading. We’ll cover it.

Why Is My eSIM Not Connecting?

Here’s the honest list of reasons this happens most often:

  • Mobile data is off for the eSIM line, and nobody told you
  • Your phone is sending internet through the wrong SIM
  • Data roaming got switched off, which is super common for travel eSIMs
  • The eSIM is installed but never fully activated
  • Your phone is carrier-locked
  • Your plan ran out of data or expired
  • You’re somewhere with genuinely bad coverage

Most of these? Five-minute fixes. Let’s go.

Make Sure Mobile Data Is Actually On For Your eSIM 📶

This is the one that gets people every single time: eSIM Not Working.

Your eSIM can be installed and activated, and everything can look fine, but if mobile data isn’t turned on for that specific line, it won’t work. It just sits there quietly doing nothing.

iPhone people:

Settings → Cellular → tap your eSIM line → check that both “Turn On This Line” and “Mobile Data” are switched on. Both. Not just one.

Android people:

Settings → Network & Internet → SIM Cards → find your eSIM → make sure it’s turned on and set as your preferred data SIM.

Honestly, check this first before anything else. You’d be surprised how often this is the whole problem.

Airplane Mode On, Then Off

I know it sounds too simple. Just do it anyway.

Turn Airplane Mode on, count to 15, turn it off. Your phone hunts for networks again from scratch. Signal drops and “no service” messages disappear a lot of the time after this.

It works because it clears whatever weird network state your phone got stuck in. Think of it like turning the internet router off and on again, except for your SIM.

Just Restart the Phone

Still nothing? Fully restart your phone.

Not sleep mode. Not lock screen. Actually, hold the power button and restart it completely.

A surprising number of eSIM issues are caused by background software glitches that a restart clears out in 30 seconds. It’s boring advice, but it genuinely works.

Turn On Data Roaming

This one is the biggest surprise for travelers: eSIM Not Working, and it catches people out constantly.

When you use a travel eSIM in another country, your phone often turns off data roaming automatically to protect you from charges. The problem is that it also blocks your travel eSIM from connecting.

iPhone:

Settings → Cellular → tap your eSIM line → turn on Data Roaming.

Android:

Settings → Network & Internet → SIM Cards → tap your eSIM → turn on Roaming.

Do this and then wait about 10 seconds. A lot of the time, the signal pops up immediately after. This is probably the fix for most people reading this right now.

Pick the Network Yourself

Your phone picks a network automatically. Sometimes it picks the wrong one. Or it can’t find one at all.

You can take control and choose manually.

iPhone:

Settings → Cellular → tap your eSIM line → Network Selection → turn off Automatic → pick from the list.

Android:

Settings → Mobile Network → turn off Automatically Select Network → pick from the list.

Try each network until one gives you bars. Yes, it’s a bit annoying. But it works when automatic selection fails.

Update Carrier Settings

This sounds way more complicated than it is.

Your phone gets small background updates that help it talk to different networks properly. If yours is out of date, your eSIM might not connect even if everything else is correct.

iPhone: Settings → General → About. If an update is available, a pop-up appears on its own. Tap Update.

Android: Settings → Software Update. Download whatever’s available and restart after.

Is Your Phone Locked to One Network?

A carrier-locked phone only works with one specific network’s SIM cards. If your phone is locked, it’ll block travel eSIMs completely — even if the eSIM is installed and activated correctly.

Check on iPhone: Settings → General → About → look for Carrier Lock. “No SIM Restrictions” means you’re unlocked. Your carrier’s name means you’re locked.

To unlock it, you have to contact your home carrier and ask. Most will do it for free once your contract is finished or your phone is fully paid off.

Delete the eSIM and Start Fresh

When nothing else works & eSIM is not working, a clean reinstall often does.

One important thing, though, before you delete the eSIM, make sure you still have your QR code or activation email. Some providers only let you use a QR code once, so contact Commbitz first to confirm you can reinstall before wiping anything.

iPhone: Settings → Cellular → tap your eSIM line → Delete eSIM → scan your QR code again.

Android: Settings → Network & Internet → SIM Cards → tap your eSIM → Delete → scan your QR code again.

Contact Commbitz Support

eSIM Not Working. You’ve tried everything. Still nothing. That’s frustrating, and I get it.

At this point, it’s probably something on the network side that you can’t fix yourself, an activation error, a configuration issue, something only the provider can see.

Message Commbitz support and tell them:

  • Your phone model
  • Your operating system version
  • Exactly what happens when you try to connect
  • Your order number or plan details

They can check the activation status from their end, resend your QR code if needed, and fix network configuration issues directly. Most problems are sorted within a few hours.

What Does That Error Message Actually Mean?

“Unable to complete eSIM activation” — Installation didn’t finish. Restart and try the QR code again.

“SIM not supported” — Phone might be carrier-locked. See Fix 7.

“No service” after activation — Data roaming is almost certainly off. Go to Fix 4 right now.

“Invalid QR code” — QR code expired or was already used. Ask your provider for a new one.

“No network available” — Bad coverage where you are, or try picking a network manually in Fix 5.

Run Through This Before You Call Anyone

✅ Mobile data is ON for the eSIM line
✅ eSIM is set as the data source (not your regular SIM)
Data roaming is ON
✅ Tried Airplane Mode trick
✅ Fully restarted the phone
✅ Carrier settings are updated
✅ Phone is unlocked
✅ Plan still has data left and hasn’t expired

If all of these are ticked and it’s still broken, that’s on the provider’s end. Not you. Contact them.

FAQs 🤔

Q1: Why is my eSIM not working after activation? Most likely, data roaming is turned off. Go to your cellular settings, tap the eSIM line, and switch on Data Roaming. Also double-check that your eSIM is set as the active data source and not your regular physical SIM.

Q2: How do I fix eSIM activation if eSIM Not Working problems on an iPhone? Go to Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM and scan your QR code again. If the eSIM already shows up but won’t connect, check that data roaming is on and that the eSIM line is selected for cellular data. If it’s still broken, delete the eSIM and reinstall using your original QR code.

Q3: My eSIM says “No Service.” What now? Airplane Mode on and off first. Then try picking your network manually instead of automatically. And if you’re traveling, check that data roaming is turned on for your eSIM line.

Q4: Can I reinstall my eSIM if it stops working? Yes, but check with Commbitz first — some QR codes are single-use and expire after the first scan. They can issue a new one if you need to reinstall. Don’t delete the profile before confirming this with them.

Q5: How do I check if my eSIM data plan is still active? Log into your account on the Commbitz app or at commbitz.com. You’ll see your active plans, remaining data, and expiry date right there. If you’ve run out, you can top up instantly without waiting.
