Had zero idea the place has something like 700,000 concrete bunkers just sitting around in fields, on beaches, wherever, left over from a war that ended a very long time ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Albania, or Shqip\u00ebria if you&#8217;re talking to someone who actually lives there, has apparently been quietly excellent this whole time. Here&#8217;s what actually stuck with me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_Locals_Dont_Really_Say_%E2%80%9CAlbania%E2%80%9D\"><\/span>1. Locals Don&#8217;t Really Say &#8220;Albania&#8221;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask someone from there what they call their country, and you&#8217;ll get <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettyimages.in\/photos\/shqiperia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Shqip\u00ebria<\/a>, not Albania. Something like &#8220;land of the eagles.&#8221; Makes total sense the second you clock the double-headed eagle on the flag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_The_Bunker_Thing_Is_Not_an_Exaggeration\"><\/span>2. Still out there. Beaches, hillsides, someone&#8217;s backyard. A handful got turned into cafes. His statue anchors Tirana&#8217;s main square, and his name&#8217;s on streets, on squares, even on a beer bottle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"7_Berat_Almost_Looks_Too_Perfect\"><\/span>7.
