Milan to Zurich. My phone at 34%, one playlist I’d already heard twice that week, and absolutely nothing else to do but stare at the Alps and question the choices that got me there. That train ride is basically why this post exists. I fixed it eventually, but it took embarrassingly long to figure out that having good data isn’t the same thing as having your entertainment sorted.

Table of Contents

Toggle

Wait, Why Does This Matter If I Already Have an eSIM

For Music, Here’s What Actually Works

For Video, Don’t Overthink It

The Underrated Pick: Podcasts and Audiobooks

A Few Things I Learned the Annoying Way

Where the eSIM Still Comes In

FAQs

Get 10% OFF — Download Our App Now!

Wait, Why Does This Matter If I Already Have an eSIM

Fair question, I asked myself the same thing. Having a Commbitz eSIM means you’re rarely fully cut off anymore, which is genuinely great. Still, flights don’t have signal, remote trails don’t have signal, and half of Europe’s train tunnels apparently agreed to have zero signal on principle. Streaming everything live also burns through data way faster than people expect, even on the bigger plans. So downloading stuff ahead of time isn’t some backup plan for people who forgot to buy data. It’s just what smart travelers do now, alongside having connectivity sorted, not instead of it.

For Music, Here’s What Actually Works

Spotify Premium is the obvious one and I’m not going to pretend otherwise. Whole playlists or albums before you head out, everything resyncs the second you’re back online- no drama. Free accounts can’t download anything, though, so if you’re still on the free tier and you travel a fair amount, do the math on how much a month of Premium actually costs you versus one bad flight with nothing to listen to.

Apple Music does basically the same thing if you’re already living in that ecosystem. Downloads are quick, sound good, and it doesn’t murder your battery on a long-haul flight the way some apps do.

I’ll also throw in YouTube Music Premium, mostly for anyone whose taste runs toward live versions or weird remixes that never seem to make it onto the bigger platforms. work the same offline way, plus you get ad-free YouTube thrown in, which matters more during a six-hour layover than you’d think.

For Video, Don’t Overthink It

Netflix has an option for a huge chunk of its catalog, just look for the little arrow next to a title. Works great for flights. Works less well if you’re the type who finishes an entire season in one sitting and then has nothing left for the flight home. Ask me how I know.

Amazon Prime Video does the same thing and honestly has a surprisingly deep download library. If you’re already paying for Prime because of the shipping, you’re wasting money by not also using this.

Disney+ rounds things out, downloads generally work fine, though every so often something’s geo-restricted depending on where you downloaded it versus where you’re trying to watch. Worth a quick check before you assume it’ll just play.

The Underrated Pick: Podcasts and Audiobooks

Audible saved more train rides than I can count. One credit a month on the standard plan, and once it’s downloaded, it doesn’t expire the way some streaming content does, so it’s genuinely a good use of dead time when you don’t want to stare at a screen anymore.

Pocket Casts and Apple Podcasts both let you queue episodes to download over WiFi the night before, instead of accidentally burning mobile data on something you could’ve grabbed for free from your hotel room.

A Few Things I Learned the Annoying Way

Download on WiFi, not mobile data, obviously, but you’d be surprised how many people forget this while rushing to pack at midnight. Downloaded content usually has an expiry window too, a lot of apps quietly pull it after 30 days if you haven’t opened them, so don’t load up six months of shows and expect them to just sit there forever. And actually, check your storage before you leave. Nothing kills a download binge faster than your phone telling you it’s full while you’re standing at the gate.

Where the eSIM Still Comes In

Downloads fix the “zero signal” problem, but they don’t fix everything. You still need real data for maps, messaging, ride shares, uploading your own photos, or streaming something you didn’t think to grab beforehand. That’s the part downloads can’t cover, and it’s where having a Commbitz eSIM already set up before you land actually matters. No hunting for airport WiFi, no standing in a SIM card queue half asleep after a long flight, just connected the moment you touch down. Downloads handle the boring offline stretches. The eSIM handles literally everything else.

FAQs

Do I need WiFi to download stuff before a trip? Ideally, yes. You can download over mobile data but it burns through your plan fast, so do it the night before on hotel or home WiFi if you can.

How long does downloaded content actually stay available? Depends on the app, but a lot of them set expiry windows, often around 30 days, or pull content if you haven’t opened the app in a while. Worth checking before a long trip.

Is any of this free? Some apps offer limited free downloads, but full offline access usually needs a paid subscription. Spotify and Netflix both require premium tiers for downloads.

Will everything I download work in another country? Mostly, yes, though a handful of titles are geo-restricted based on licensing. Double-check before assuming it’ll all just play once you land.

If I’ve downloaded everything I need, do I still need an eSIM? Yes. Downloads only cover entertainment. You’ll still need actual data for maps, messages, and everything that doesn’t come pre-loaded. A Commbitz eSIM covers that gap the second you land.

Get 10% OFF — Download Our App Now!

Enjoy instant savings when you buy eSIMs through our app.

    Coupon Code:
    APP10

Traveling with an eSIM?
